Pressure grows to consider more than math, reading scores
Lawmakers and other policymakers increasingly are considering using science tests, graduation rates, college admission rates, AP scores or even physical education achievements as criteria for holding schools accountable. Some fear using such benchmarks would dilute NCLB, while others welcome broadening its scope. "There ought to be more in determining students' success than just one test score," said Reg Weaver, National Education Association president. "Preparing a child for the 21st century means reading and math. But it also means science; it means civics; it means art." The Washington Post (12/16)
